The beginning of the existence of Tugu Bhuana Kerta Buleleng can be traced from the events that occurred on January 17, 1948. At that time, the people of northern Bali made a promise that in the location where they made the promise, a temple of the Republic would be built. The promise would be fulfilled when the Republic of Indonesia won against the invaders.
However, the word Pura Republik pledged by the people of North Bali still does not have a clear physical form. In fact, there was no design of how the temple would look like. Until finally, the Balinese people agreed to build a monument or monument at a predetermined location on March 31, 1966.
Get to know the History of Bhuana Kerta Monument Construction
The construction of the monument, which was later called Tugu Bhuana Kerta Buleleng, required an area of 1,350 hectares. This monument is considered the right representation to illustrate the struggle that has been carried out by the people of North Bali. The height of the monument, which is deliberately set at 17 meters, is considered a visualization of the sacred figures of Indonesia’s independence day.
Despite choosing a monument design that is considered appropriate in representing the struggle of the Indonesian people, in its construction, this monument still represents Balinese culture. This design can be seen with several Balinese symbols that can be found on this historical monument.
At the top of the monument, tourists will find a padmasana and fire. Both are symbolized as a gift from the Creator who has given independence to the people of Indonesia. The number of strands of padmasana and fire at the top is deliberately made 8 strands, symbolizing the month of Indonesian independence. It’s not enough to stop there. Tourists can also get a tray with 45 slits at the bottom of the monument. The 45 slits are considered to represent the year of Indonesia’s independence. With this symbolic representation, Tugu Bhuana Kerta Buleleng has a very important meaning for the Balinese people.
